Maternal Death Stats

Hello Ploggers and top of the Year to you. I hope that we are all ready to go out and attack our issues and stand on taller ground. That is my general goal for myself in 2023. That and cleaning out my garage, reading more and donating to Goodwill more often.
When the Dobbs decision first came down there were some dire predictions for women of all colors. It was predicted that post Dobbs, deaths would rise by 24% and for black women by 39%. Here are some Pre Dobbs statistics and raw numbers. Ectopic pregnancy is the most common cause of maternal mortality in the first trimester. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines maternal death as “death of a women while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy”. According to WHO 2% of pregnancies are ectopic.
2018- 654 maternal deaths
2019- 754 maternal deaths
2020 861 maternal deaths
2021 1,178 maternal deaths. The increase in numbers for 2020 and 2021 are partly attributed to Covid 19. Rates of maternal deaths increase with age. They also increase with being Non-Hispanic Black women and Hispanic women. White women have the lowest rate of maternal deaths per 100,000. Social determinants of health were exacerbated by the Pandemic and added to the increased rate of maternal deaths.
The latest CDC study from September is reporting 1,018 maternal deaths. This data is only from 36 states and shows a doubling of the number for 14 states. I have not been able to find year-long 2022 data at this point. I am expecting the Dobbs decision to have a negative effect. The statistics that are currently in (up to September) are concerning. When the results from the entire country are published I will be plogging about it right here The numbers provide hard evidence for the effects that the repeal of Roe has had on the lives of American women. RECLAIM!
