Rosalynn Carter

Plog Number 244

Rosalynn Carter

Hello Ploggers, how are you all?  In my neck of the woods we had a great big snow ❄️ storm last night. We got about 6 inches of the white stuff. Schools were cancelled. It got cold and blowy and I was thankful to have been able to work from home.

It is a sad day in the Carter family as I watch the public funeral. I think that Americans take an interest in our first ladies similar to other countries and their 👰‍♀️Monarchs. Whenever I go to the Smithsonian I visit the First Ladies gowns exhibit and try to picture them dancing with their husbands at their Inaugural Balls. It is a thrill every time.

Rosalind Carter presented and carried herself as a classy, simple and elegant woman. She seemed to be a❤️ loving and supportive partner to Jimmy. I imagine her to have been the type of woman who baked🍪 and cooked great meals for her family. Her grandson said most of her recipes started out with mayonnaise. Rosalynn always looked well put together but not over glamorized. I loved that about her.

Her post white house years were also amazing. She dug in and got her hands dirty in many ways. She and Jimmy helped build🏡 homes for Habitat for Humanity. Actual homes! She was also a big advocate for Mental Health research. She worked to fight the Stigma of mental illness. She also wrote books. She established a national butterfly🐝 pollinator garden trail to help the environment. That garden spans the country.

As First Lady she pushed for childhood💉 immunizations and helped fight childhood disease. Her efforts had an impact on measles at the time. As a First Lady she attended some of the Oval Office Cabinet meetings because she was so inquisitive about the inner workings of the presidency. Jimmy finally said “why don’t you just come so you can see for yourself” She was also bilingual and served as Jimmy’s representative to Latin America in 1977. As a person who does Duolingo every day, I am so impressed by that. She supported her husband throughout the Camp David Accord which led to enduring efforts at peace in the middle east. Looking back at her life and accomplishments takes me back to what was going on in my life at that time. I feel a sadness at losing her. She was bright and sharp. She said it was a” relief” to have Biden in the white house and she approved of his work. It is said that she was deeply disappointed at not winning re-election but she did not let that define her. She handled it with class and made the best of it. God Bless you Rosalyn Carter RECLAIM
