Plog number 14

Hello all, hope you are feeling fine. I want to talk about the Sassy women I love watching on TV. There were many that I liked enough to consider as role models. On most sit-coms there are either 3 or 4 women who are the main characters. There will be a funny one, a sex crazed one, a sweet one and the mouth. Let’s talk about TV. I am a true TV person. I watch every day unashamedly. One of my favorite shows was Sex and the City. Carrie was funny. Charlotte was sweet. Samantha was sexy and Miranda Hobbs was The Mouth. Miranda was a lawyer who could cut you up effortlessly if needed. I remember she said to the taxi driver who was listening to their sex talk “Hello?? you are driving”. Or when she woke Steve up about ball replacement surgery "Steve do you want a Ford Pinto near your penis?" Or "What did you have a big plate of crazy for lunch?" after Carrie proposed some insane idea. Or when she noticed that Carrie’s date was a little long in the tooth she said “Hello 60!!”. She was funny, smart and mouthy. Just the kind of friend you would like to have along in case you got into a pickle. I looked at her as the voice of reason in that group.

Another show I loved was Designing Women. On this show Charlene was the ditz. Suzanne was the Sexy one. Mary Jo was the sweetheart and Julia Sugarbaker was the mouth. Julia also wore Peplum suits with a flare. Peplums have gone out of style but if I find one while shopping, I buy it. The show is from the 80’s so all of them wore pretty big hair. Julia frequently read people and ripped them to shreds. When she was going off she would start out by saying the person’s full name. “Uh Mr. Ray Don is it, well let me tell you…” She took deep breaths and continued on until she had annihilated her opponent. One of her rants even ended in a song lyric. “🎶And Marjorie, that was the night ,that the lights, went out in Georgia🎶” She said all those words in a Staccato tempo with her face up close and personal. I cannot get enough of that show.

Saving the best for last is the Golden Girls. For this one it is Dorothy Zbornak hands down. Rose was the sweet one. Blanche was the sex pot. Sophie was super sassy and funny. But Dorothy was the mouth. I already loved Bea Arthur from Maude, but in Golden Girls she got even better. Bea was 5’9” which is tall in my book and she had a super low voice. She just commanded respect. Dorothy would not stand for any nonsense in her world. She would throw out sheisty repairmen, perverts and her ex-husband. Bea had great timing and could say a lot without saying a word. She read her ex-husband Stanley for shabby treatment during the marriage. When he tried to speak up, she pointed to and showed him the door. He left with his head (and his toupee) in his hands. I loved the character of Dorothy. She was funny, smart and resolute in her decisions.

I talk about these women because these are women I strive to emulate. Not everyone can be as eloquent as the TV characters of whom I speak. Many of us find ourselves thinking of catchy comebacks long after the argument is over. Getting the words out in the right time is no easy feat. There are certain situations where you are better off being quiet. But I feel like our days of being silent and powerless are over. Since doing this plog I have learned of many ways that we can express our will and make a difference. MLK said that a riot is the language of the unheard. There are a lot of things that we can do that fall somewhere between saying nothing and rioting. I will address those things in a later Plog.

As I get ready to close, I just have to mention something I recently heard. Regarding all the talk about Critical Race Theory in Public School Education, I heard of a more Euphemistic term. Instead of American Slavery, a focus group for second grade education has come up with the term “Involuntary Relocation”. The Texas State Board of Education rejected the change promptly. Neither Julia, Miranda or Dorothy would stand for the mamby pamby and misleading term like “Involuntary Relocation”. Like the Texas BOE we have to reject nonsense when we see it.

Good Day All Reclaim
