Hello Ploggers, how are you. We were able to get together with family over the holidays and I enjoyed their company. If that was your goal, I hope you did the same. The holidays are a great time to reconnect. After our Christmas dinner, we were all sitting around talking and suddenly the room fell silent. Lets get into it.
My high school senior niece was telling us about her teacher who is openly racist. She goes to a public🏡 school. She said that he said that some races of students were smarter at doing assignments better than others. She seemed to think that he meant that white people were better at it. Then she said something was said about bringing his son into the class to meet them. He promptly said that he son wouldn’t be comfortable around so many black people. I asked her if it was a Public School. She said yes. I was😮 floored.
I have always had a high 👏regard for teachers, especially in public schools. I think that they deserve combat♕ medals. I have also long been a believer that kids are not born being racist. They learn racism from their parents, grandparents and other influencers in their lives. This teacher seemed to have no problem saying how he felt about black people and imputing his opinions to his son. Parents pretty much own their kids and they teach them things on a daily basis. I know that I have taught my daughter things I wanted her to know about life. As a young Black girl, I felt the need to prepare her about a racist world. But, I honestly can say that I never purposefully taught her to be racist.
In the black world we kind of teach Racism on the🏈 Offensive. I can’t imagine ignoring the realities of racism with black children. Sending them out into the world without teaching them how to be aware of and to react to racism. I remember when I was a kid, a white girl told me that racism was a thing of the past. She seemed to believe it and was trying to convince me of it too. Even as a kid I wasn’t buying it.
But I think that the point of this plog is to say that people are very📢 emboldened these days. Perhaps it is a Trump win and all that brings with it. I am still shocked that a public school teacher would be so bold to say things he said to my niece’s class. He was being honest but hurtful. And he didn’t care. How is that OK? RECLAIM!
