The Party of Lincoln

Plog Number 295

The Party of Lincoln

Hello Ploggers, how are you. It is a blissfully☀️ sunny Wednesday here. BTW was there ever a word that is more misspelled than Wednesday. Phonetically it is probably Wed-nes-day not Wends-day. I have noticed that since I was a kid.

I am going to refer back to the Church⛪️ ladies I grew up with for today’s plog. They certainly had some influence on me, although we are very different. When they were recently asked why they were 45 supporters they said something to the effect of “Who freed the slaves?” obvious answer Lincoln. With a response of “enough said?” Something like that. And I have heard other black people say that they vote Republican for that very same reason. My father and his people were from Kentucky and the Dayton area. My father explained to me that many in his family voted Republican for the very same reasoning that Lincoln freed the slaves. My father did not vote Republican. I want to talk about the difference between an 1865 Republican and a modern day Republican.

In 1865 the Republican Party was opposed to the expansion of slavery and led the fight to destroy the Confederate States of America. Under the leadership of Lincoln and a Republican Congress, the Republican Party led the fight to defeat the Confederate States in the American Civil War, preserving the Union and abolishing slavery. Abraham Lincoln belonged to the National Union Party and they were used by the Republican Party. As for the Democrats, although they did not establish political parties, the Congress was still dominated by former Democratic politicians. But many white southerners switched to the Republican Party during the 1960’s. They favored conservative positions on taxes, moral values and national security. Today's Republican Party used a law from 1867 in Arizona to enact current abortion laws.

It is pretty easy to see that the party of Lincoln was closely associated with Republicans through the National Union Party. They are the closest thing to a Republican that we can find from Lincoln’s day. But it is also obvious that the party has shifted its stance dramatically. In fact it is almost a complete flip flop that the two parties have undergone. So I find it weird that people would choose a political party for their present day needs by how the party was 2 centuries ago. Things change. People change. Parties change. Black people who still support the “Party of Lincoln” need to change. At the very least they need to evaluate how the party is today and to make a good choice based on your 2024 needs. I did not decide to vote Democrat based on how the party was in the past. It is their current stance that matters to me. RECLAIM!
